Confused? Yes. I need love.

"WTF"

That sums up my experiences as a spriter. I'm very confused right now, and not just any kind of confused. Confused as in just witnessing a panda bear suddenly shedding lots and lots of fur to the point where it's just a bald bear, and then suddenly standing on two legs, pulls a pants and a shirt out of its mouth, putting it on, and then revealing that yes, the world is in fact flat.

I need help.

I have absolutely no idea where to even begin in the world of spriting. I mean, some sources tell me that I should use MS Paint, while most of them say that I should use Photo Shop CS2 or something and that thing costs quite a bit of money, a little under one thousand dollars the last time I check.

So, where do I even begin in spriting?

And how exactly do I convert my sprites to actual .spr files for use in Ragnarök Online servers. I'm sad and confused and deeply disturbed.

Like a man realizing that he's gaining feelings for his 34 year old married male mechanic with coffee stained teeth.

Thus far, I don't even know where to begin, where to continue, and how to end. So, oh wonderful spriters, oh creator of arts, I ask of you, please help this poor, pathetic nublette out x.x

Nyanko

First, you need to think about the program that suits you best.
If paint is too basic for you maybe try photoshop, if photoshop it too expensive then be creative!
It's not the only program in the world, why not paintshop? It does all the stuff photoshop can do for sprite editing.
Secund, simple sprite editing and spriting for in-game usage are close but not the same. Yes you need paint, photoshop or what ever program you prefer for creating the sprite but the you need other programs to make if funcional.
If you are interesed in such thing I suggest you to visit R.U.N.E.

Please note that this site is not a gallery like this, if you just want to showcase images just stay here.
This forum provides support and guides for beginners (and not so new) spriters, scripters, mappers and any other who wishes to learn how to customize ro.
The guides are located in the wiki (upper menu buttons) If you still fill insecure use the search button and if you don't find answers then post your questions in the support forum.
There's a lot of people so you will find assistance, help and costructive critism.

Also, R.U.N.E IS NOT A DOWNLOAD SITE, yes they have downloads but is not the main function.

I was like this when I learn about spriting in 2002. As nyanko said see what best fits you, there ARE many programs out there, nyanko just gave you 2 program that are mostly used in the community, few out there are good, one I would highly recommend would be IDRAW 3. It's a RPG-Maker Program but its like buffed up version of MS PAINT only more plain. Another is Graphics Gale it's highly used and they have 2 versions Lite Version (FREE) and Full Version, Trust me you'll have fun with GraphicsGale it's very easy to use and user-friendly.

Best to look at some work on this forum or other communities, Hope this help, Now one thing I ask you DEARLY is to not be a Leecher, a Ripper, and a Thief. You'll be frowned upon for doing that.

Take care now.
