Someone is using our edits

Lisu

A friend of mine showed me this site after seeing one of my edits on there. They are using them as graphics for thier site.

I dont know if any of you already knew, or gave permission, but I know I didnt give permission for mine.

Alot of them looked familer when I looked, and I saw mine. Only place I post my edits are here, and sometimes my LJ. The others I saw looks familer and I knew they were from here.

Anyway, here's the site:
http://www.ceres-ro.net/

Looks like a private server in the works.

I just thought I would let everyone know.

Lisu

I guess no one cares that much, lol.

^^

Miakoda

>:/

Another Private Server using our sprites? Geesh...would it hurt someone to atleast ASK before they take. I mean c'mon...wtf. :/

MiYeon

I saw mine too... the high priestess that i edited her sitting pose >.> (on "download" page)

Lisu

Unless anyone objects to it, I'm going to try and contact the person in charge there, either using the forum or thier IRC chat and ask that they either contact the person who made the sprite and tell them they used it, or ask that they take them down.

I dont plan on being rude =o I just would like to inform these people that we dont apprechiate our work being used without our permission. Especialy the really good ones, lol (Mine sucks o.O). And the ones that stated not to use thier work without permission, which I have seen alot (I should have done it).

In a way I'm surprised they used one of mine, it's not even that great. It was only an eye edit. >.>

Anyway, if anyone wants to do the same, go for it.

But if anyone would think it best not to bother with it, let me know. I dont want to speak on your behalf if you dont want me too. ^^

kentexanchik

Bad or good, u guys all do this stuff better.
i dont even OWN the stuff 2 edit, and im making a pserver
i swear 2 god that i am not that person who steals pics, my conscience wont let me xD
anyway, ive been on that site, and i get what u mean. people from here have their own work as buttons or loading pages!
it's sick!!

Miakoda

I dont have a problem with it at all Lisu. :3 Its best that they find out as soon as possible. :P

I dont see why they used my edit either. They didnt even use the animation..and without that its just a HP with a blue dress. hehe. :P

Lisu

Ok, thier forum sucks, either there isnt anything on it or it's all hidden and I have to do something special to see them (other then sign up).

I'll check the IRC channel tomorrow. Hopefully I can make some progress. ^^;

EDIT: Nevermind.. suddenly the forums are open. o.O Weird.

Lisu

Ok, this is what I said:
Greetings.

I'll get to the point.
I have spoken to a few people about the custom sprites on the homepage and banners. We do not apprechiate our work being used without our permission. We understand that original RO sprites are not ours, but when we make edits to those, we would like for people to understand that it has became our art. And as such, we don't like it when our art is being used without people asking.

I know that alot of them were not asked for, because I was not asked(Yes, I know one of mine was used, I see it on the front page), and neither were others I talked to.

We would like to ask that you either contact the person who made the sprite and tell them you used it, or take them down. It should be easy, most of them are posted at the Custom RO Sprites Collection site. I'm sure that is were mine came from since that is the only place I posted mine.

We are glad you like our custom edited sprites, and that you wanted to use them so your site would look better, but please remember to ask the person who made it first before you decide to use it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I do apologize if I posted in the wrong topic.

~Lisu"

This is the reply I got:
Hm. You got a point. Also you're missing one. If you're posting on internet, you're committing to share it with alot of people. For example, I wouldn't post my picture on the internet, if I didn't want it to be shared between people I don't even know; many people can also use my pics as like: oh wow this is me. - not that will make me 100% happy, but won't make me 100% sad ya know. It's morelike: "Oh wow, they liked my picture, so they are using it!" - Some sorta ego boost.

The fact is: if i'm adding something to a public website, without password, without any type of security, just with "Give credits" words doesn't mean 100% of the visitors WILL give you credits. Of course, like I said, if all of you wanted those sprites to be "unique", you wouldn't have posted or, maybe, protected it.

I agree every work deserves a credit, even the smallest. I'm just stating that you all should be happy that a big server like Ceres is using your sprites and that your work was appreciated AND WE NEVER TOOK ANY CREDITS OVER THEM smile.gif We just didn't give the proper credits, which we are kindly open to give it.

I appreciate the way you behaved, without flaming, and I apologize if this has caused anything -bad- to you or any other graphic workers from the website. That was not our intention. Plus this is also a "free" advertisement of you guys work. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not giving excuses, just saying both sides has helped each others somehow. I'm sure you guys work are way more appreciated right now, as like Ceres is appreciated too, even without the proper credits.

If you want to discuss about how the credits should be added, please let me know. Also let me know if I am wrong in what I said.

Regards~

And this is what I said in return:
That is true that we posted to the open internet. I myself dont have a problem with mine being use, as it is my fault I never stated any "Please dont use without my permission". But lots of others did, and they would like for that to be respected.
I am greatful that credit was not taken for them. ^^

I will talk to the others about proper credit. Right now that best thing I can think of is adding a link somewhere to the Custom RO Sprites and stating that they were made by various people.
I dont know who made which ones or the name of them, so it may be a little trouble to list the name of each work and people.

That is, unless, who ever collected them remembers which one belongs to who. ^^
But again, it may just be easier to do it the other way.

I will tell the others what you said and then relay what they said back. If you want to continue this in private, such as a PM on the forums or a PM or such, I can do that. Might be best. ^^

Thank you for your reply!

If you have anything you want to say, tell me now and I will get the message to them. ^^

Miakoda

Hmm, well atleast they were kind enough to not flame either. Like the last one... *shifty eyes*

I actually don't mind if people use my edits...as long as they ask me its just fine with me. For the way that site is...It would probably end up being easier to put something about where the graphics featured on the site were found and link directly here. :o

atleast that's what i think will end up being best for those who don't mind their edits being used.

I've never had the benifits of having someone stolen my sprites beofre, as he/she said who replied to you lisu I would feel veryhappy but major piss-off if someon douche tooked the credits and said "ALL FOR ME!!!! I MAKE THIS TOOK ME HALF A YEAR CAUSE RO IS SO GRAPHIXAL!"

I say let it go if they wanna use let them, as he/she said once the pic is uploaded on the internet it automatically means your not protecting it or anything you just want to share it with other as you and me and everyone is doing now.

I see what you are saying. It is nice that someone likes another persons edits enough to use them to decorate a site or their own ingame graphics on their pserver or whatever. It's actually very flattering. The thing is, is that some people just wish to have some type of common curtosy for another to ASK before their work is used. I know it won't always happen...

It would be nice if anyone who wanted to use our edits, to ask permission first.

strider0714

me too. I saw Miakoda's "Helloo Nurse" at Deliverance RO

D.Einder

Yeah, but it's really hard to write "please ask permission for our work" They'll just still use it cause it "matches" with there theme. once they see your work they will have a perfect idea to con you into saying but it matches with our server and site, I understand that, I forgot that I did had this problem before but not like your situation which I was upset to hear.

I guess Simm and naki (the owners? lol) Should make a anti right click and screen cap protectection in this site, cause I love this place hate when things like this happen, but as I said in my previous post just another bump just speed right over them, you know who really made it.

Zeio

I have met with my sprites on the rival hungarian servers homesite. I wanted to see it is true or not cause i heard on the server's forum i play that someone created that custom class... and than i saw my sprites. It was so LOL! I laughed so long after that.
And in nowadays i found that in the RO-Guardians forum that a user shows our sprites as his own. Well. Another laugh by me. My brother told me contact with the guy but i don't mind. And than a user named Damien posted Simn's AWESOME(yes, this site) site's url and jaws are cracked. After that any other user who bowed to the liar said so much things which i don't want to quote here :)

Yeah if noobs can't make a pic (because they're too stupid ) then they will copy for someone else and (or) recolour it or say they made it. That's why I use paint AND NOT photoshop

(OK now I have to stop spamming) I'm 12 years old (this's true) and I now that it's very wrong and rude to steal edit from other site (angry part ISN'T THAT EASY JUST TO TELL THE TRUE THAT YOU STOLE A PIC FROM SOME1 ELSE OR JUST TO LISTEN ABOUT THE WORDS "PLEASE DO NOT USE MY EDITS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION") god ¬¬

ok well im lucky I suck so much i cant make any customs so they cant be taken without permision but I only take these customs for my persional use like to spruce up somthing or make a cool backround and
If i put it on the internet i will always ask. but the least they could do is put a link to the site and say we got some of our custom ro sprites form here and I think some of you just flames i have no idea.
Trying my best to keep sane...

Emmeline: using Paint instead of Photoshop does not secure your sprites. One can easily crop out what you have with a few minutes effort, convert it into a format of choice, and say they "made it" as much as anything else; in fact, for security, I'd much rather USE Photoshop.

Why? .PSD(s). They are in my opinion, the end-all security device for sprite work; if someone takes your graphic piece and claims it as their own, and you show you have a .PSD with each individual piece and bit of it while they cannot produce the same? They're instantly disproven.

Still; yeah, it fails that people take credit for others' work.. but, it'll happen regardless. The people that steal this stuff don't care about art or the work put into said art; their thought process goes as far as,

-HEY A SITE ABOUT RO LOL
-HOLY FUK SPRITES THAT LEWK KEWL I DOWNLOAD
-YEAAAAAHH MY SERER LEOOK COOL W/ MY CUSTOM STUFF

I'd say close to 60% of the people that rip sprites here don't even know they're doing anything wrong. Because they don't read. XD

so they can still steal my work /omg? (I wish I had photoshop /sob but my sister doesn't want that /bhu)

Well, things like watermarks, dates, and .PSD(s) are your best bet on protecting your artwork.

Watermarks for obvious reasons; dates.. rather simple, really. Let us say someone posts an art piece you created on the 29th of October saying they'd just made it, when you posted it on another forums two whole months prior to that. While it's not definite proof? It discredits them.

.PSD(s) are just pwn. Use aside, it protects your artwork because.. let's say, you call them on it. You show your .PSD. [Screenshot'd suffice.] And let's say, you got.. mm.. 40-50 layers. What the Hell can they do? The answer: very little.

Photoshop's not your only option, of course. There's a number of decent alternatives out there for free [like GIMP.] Paint is still really useful, actually; but for "RAW POWERHR LOL," you'll want an upgrade. =P

Still; to give you an example? I could take your Poring sprite here..

Open it up in ImageReady, edit it frame by frame, add a background and recolor the Poring. Post it somewhere, go "GUYS LEWK AT THIS HARDCORE THING I MADE!!!" .. and what could you do to disprove me? Without something like a .PSD, you have little credible evidence against me - and given your sprites use white backgrounds, picking apart a watermark [unless it's part of the sprite itself] wouldn't be hard. =P

But, as I've said before: people who can only steal sprites? Are epic fail anyway. :Flex:

My old username: "D.Einder" Just letting some users know.

I say the best thing to do is to put a very light watermark, that should be ENFORCED here to put watermark on every piece of masterpiece thats done. It would help prevent people from taking and they ask and you give them the one without the watermark. I say thats the best protection for your work to be protected

NoKey

Anyway, I haven't read the hole thread yet but this is just my words on it.

Its going to happen weather you like it or not, even if it bothers you so much it makes you want to kill that person. If you don't like watermarking then you would have to coop with people doing these things. (People can still steal even with watermark too)

I'v worked on the private server side ages ago and I'v had tons of creations (not sprites but same idea) taken from me and used by other private servers (yes I did manage to screw them over), however after a few months later other people started to do the same thing.

Then after that, I started not careing and stoped posting anything that would result other people having my finished work. I only posted ideas and features.

Although, you may beable to stop them but it will keep happening over and over again.

Note: I'm not on either side, just posting.

The solutions been taken care of long time ago nokey. Don't know why it's being brought up again, put the line "Please ask for permission before you steal or borrow" Or however it goes.

I'm sure watermarking is a bit dumb but still a extra idea on the table.
